Diabetes is a devastating disease killing one American every three minutes—a new case is diagnosed every 40 seconds. Currently over 16 million Americans have diabetes and taking insulin does not cure diabetes nor prevent the development of complications such as kidney failure, adult blindness, heart attack, stroke, non-traumatic amputations and nerve damage. Diabetes accounts for more than $105 billion annually in US healthcare costs.
JDRF, the world’s leading nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of diabetes research, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes—a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. The Georgia Chapter of JDRF was established in 1978 in Atlanta, and also has active councils in Augusta, Columbus, Charleston, and Savannah. The Georgia Chapter is one of over 85 chapters and affiliates across the United States and around the world.
Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $1 billion to diabetes research worldwide. JDRF is proud to say that 87 cents of every dollar goes directly to research and education about research. The organization’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
