Congress Successfully Overrides President’s Medicare Veto:  $300 million for Type 1 Research Secured!!!
As expected, the President vetoed the Medicare bill on July 16, 2008. Soon after the veto, the House was successful in overriding the veto by a vote of 383-41. Following the House vote, the Senate was also successful in overriding the veto by a vote of 70-26.

The bill will now become law and will provide $300 million for type 1 diabetes research, representing the second largest influx of research dollars ever provided to fight this disease. Congratulations to all of you who have been educating your Members of Congress over the past year about the need for a multi-year renewal of the SDP. All of your meetings, letters, and constant contact have made a real impact and you should feel proud of what your advocacy has helped to achieve. Coupled with the one year extension of the SDP secured last December, JDRF has been able to secure $450 million for type 1 diabetes research over the past six months!!

JDRF Promise to Remember Me Campaign

WHEN:
The “Promise” campaign began November 1, 2001, in conjunction with National Diabetes Awareness Month.

WHAT:
The JDRF Promise to Remember Me Campaign asks Members of Congress to “promise to remember” those affected by diabetes when making decisions regarding diabetes research.

The mission of the Promise to Remember Me Campaign is to further relationships between people who are affected by diabetes and their lawmakers, and to capture the request for a “promise” in a photograph. Families affected by this disease will meet with their Representatives and Senators during local town hall meetings, in local offices, and at events throughout the country. Our hope is that the Promise to Remember Me Campaign will put a face to the millions of Americans who live with the disease and result in commitments by Members of Congress to support federal policies that will speed our path to a cure.

WHO:
The “Promise” campaign involves JDRF volunteers in all 50 states who are meeting with their Members of Congress in their home districts during town hall meetings, public events, or personal visits to the Member’s local office. “Promise” volunteers take photos of their visits with Members, which are all put on the national JDRF website to view. For more information on progress achieved thus far around the country, visit our National Promise to Remember Me Campaign headquarters.
